The Wailea Beach Marriott in Maui is one of the finest resort properties in Hawaii: beachfront, ocean views from every suite, multiple pools, the works. A Premium Ocean View Suite runs well north of $600 per night at rack rate. We redeemed it on Bonvoy points at 50,000 points per night.

With a quick stopover in LA on the way, this trip shows how hotel points (often overlooked) can add up to something genuinely luxurious without the guilt of a cash bill.

The route

Leg by leg

• Leg 01 · YYZ → LAX

  Toronto to Los Angeles: Stopover

  A day or two in LA on the way out, easily covered with points for the hotel, and a cheap cash fare or points hop to get there from Toronto. LA stopover makes the routing practical and adds a city break to the trip.

• Leg 02 · LAX → OGG

  Los Angeles to Maui

  Short hop across the Pacific to Kahului: into the Maui heat, past the sugar cane fields, south along the coast to Wailea. Check in at the Marriott and collect the keys to the Ocean View Suite.

• Leg 03 · Wailea stay

  Wailea Beach Marriott

  Days on the beach, snorkelling off the hotel's private cove, the Road to Hana by rental car, sunrise at Haleakalā, sunsets from the lanai with a mai tai. The resort runs its own activities program: whale watching in season, stand-up paddle, cultural classes.

• Leg 04 · OGG → YYZ

  Maui home

  Return connecting through the mainland. Points or a cash fare depending on what's available. Either way, the bulk of the trip's value was in the nightly rate at Wailea.
